Botanical Heritage and Dark Botany Sculpture Artist

Janet Howkins is a UK-based botanical sculptor specialising in plant casting and sculptural work exploring the history, toxicity, and cultural significance of plants through direct casting from real botanical specimens.

Her practice transforms plant forms into sculptural reliefs and installations that reveal their intricate physical detail while engaging with wider narratives drawn from botanical science, history, folklore, and toxicology. Particular attention is given to species with strong cultural associations, including medicinal and poisonous plants.

Working across both individual works and large-scale installations, Janet creates sculptures for private collectors, gardens, historic houses, and cultural institutions. Her work has been developed in collaboration with leading UK botanical and environmental organisations, alongside heritage sites including RHS Bridgewater, Ormesby Hall, Capesthorne Hall, Didsbury Parsonage, Stori Brymbo and the Museum of Wigan Life. She has also completed major private commissions for international clients, including a site-specific installation for a private estate on the island of Mustique.

Janet's recent work focuses on a developing series exploring poisonous plants and their cultural histories, intended for exhibition and installation in both public and private contexts.

Janet welcomes commissions, collaborations, and exhibition enquiries.
